Black Lightning Executive Producers Salim Akil and Mara Brock Akil spoke at the recent ATX TV Festival in Austin, Texas, and in doing so, they talked about a few spoiler subjects — including revealing one of the villains of the series as Tobias Whale!

“We really want to explore the characters, even the villains. I think one of the most interesting characters right now from a storytelling standpoint is Tobias,” Salim Akil said at the event, in a report published by IBTimes. “Because we’re not having him sort of twist his mustache. His hatred for himself and for others comes from a real place, so we want to know why he’s like that.”

The Akils also spoke about other subjects about what they call a “character-based family drama.” One of those subjects was the question many have asked: Could we see Virgil Hawkins, a.k.a. Static Shock, on the show?

“I love the idea of Static Shock, and in success, hopefully, we’ll be able to pull other characters in in that way,” Salim said. “So I’m holding out hope because I love that character.”

Other tidbits:

  • Jefferson Pierce’s daughter TAnissa (Thunder) will indeed be a lesbian as she is in the comic books, and other characters who may identify as something other than heterosexual are said to be included as well.
  • They aren’t discounting the idea of an Arrowverse crossover or tie-in. “The storytelling is a little bit more political. It’s topical, and it’s a little grittier. … It doesn’t mean that down the road there won’t be visits,” Salim said on the panel.
